Rupert’s first reading from Rupert’s Lending Library. Today’s choice was “The Magic Pear Tree” retold by Cheryl Stroud and illustrated by Jean and. Mou-sien Tseng.

The story is about a greedy farmer who wasn’t kind to a hungry man. Instead of giving him a pear, he waved him away. Other members of the community saw this and gave him money to buy something to eat…

Sometimes in books, they leave the ending open to continue the story or for the reader to create their own ending. In this book, the author ends the book with the opportunity to change the ending. After listening to the story, ask your child and self these questions:

1. What can the farmer do differently next time?
2. What did you notice happened when others were kind?
3. What did you notice happened when others were greedy?
4. How would you change the ending to the story?
